Zanzibar is an ideal beach-getaway, off the coast of Tanzania, in the Indian Ocean. Here are some tips for sights and activities on the island!

Zanzibar island is the perfect place to relax on a beach, swim, read, and drink fruity cocktails. But there are also numerous things to see on the island, from Stone Town to the old Slave Market, from spice plantations to churches and mosques. Here are some hints for where to get started when it comes to exploring this beautiful island.

1) Stone Town

This old area of the city is a maze of narrow alleys and tall stone buildings, originally occupied by Arab and Indian settlers. Everywhere you turn you'll see something new, and it's easy to spend hours wandering through the place, smelling exotic spices, local seafood, and the aromas seeping out onto the streets from myriad cafés and restaurants. There are many shops here, where you can buy local clothes and handicrafts, as well as pharmacies and mini-marts for all the essentials.

Take a walk through the main market, which is divided into three sections: meat, fruit and vegetables, and fish, and make sure to keep your camera handy. It's also a good idea to buy a map of Stone Town if you're going there without a guide. Make sure to check out the two churches and many mosques, as well as the Hindu Temple. In addition, there is an ATM in Stone Town, at a Barclay's Bank, where you can get some shillings.

2) Spice Plantations

Zanzibar is often referred to as the island of spices, with just cause. The island produces mass amounts of spices every year, with so many different fares flourishing there. Arrange a spice tour with your hotel or a local travel agency and have the chance to walk through a plantation with a tour by one of the "Spice Boys," as the locals call them. You'll have the opportunity to identify and smell many types of spices, as well as fruit and vegetables. Take beautiful photos of vanilla, cinnamon, cloves, pepper, chillies, lemongrass, and many more spices. You'll also be able to purchase local and fresh spices at the conclusion of the tour.

3) Snorkeling at Blue Lagoon

Located on the eastern coast of Zanzibar, Blue Lagoon is a beautiful stretch of crystal clear water, protected by coral reefs from waves. Bike there or take a taxi and pay only a few US dollars to rent some snorkeling equipment and swim over the reefs. You'll see tons of fish, crabs, and amazing coral formations. You can also pay a bit more and have a traditional dhow boat take you out further. Afterwards, have lunch at the awesome hill-top restaurant next to the pier and have stunning views of the lagoon.

4) Scooters and Bikes

If you're looking for some exercise or just a faster way to get around the island, rent a bicycle or scooter and explore at your own leisure. Expect to pay between $5 - 15 for a bicycle and $10 - $30 for a scooter. The roads are smooth and not too crowded unless you're heading into Stone Town, and it's also perfectly acceptable and enjoyable to ride on the sand.
